Training to be number one
Part 2: More games and exercises for goalkeeper training
When Manuel Neuer was named Germany’s player of the year last year, it was the first time in 10 years that a goalkeeper had been awarded that title. But while his predecessor Oliver Kahn was honored primarily for his outstanding skills on defense, Neuer earned it as a “total” keeper who actively participates in every situation. In our May 2010 issue, German national-team coach Andreas Köpke detailed the qualities today’s goalkeepers need to possess, with sample exercises for each one. In this issue, he returns with an update.
The modern keeper: Not just a shot-stopper!
Game analysis shows that today’s “goal players” do much more than protect the goal
Modern goalkeeper training focuses on the situations keepers face in match play. But what exactly do today’s top keepers do? What kinds of plays are they typically involved in? And how do these challenges relate to the way they train? Ernst Thaler and Steffen Krebs have done an analysis of the Bundesliga’s goalkeepers and found that most of their plays involve both defensive and offensive characteristics. That’s why the authors refer to them as “goal players” rather than “goalkeepers” in this article.
Training a better winger
Position-specific technique and tactics training, part 4: the outside midfielder
Players like Bastian Schweinsteiger and Cristiano Ronaldo stand out for their amazing talents. Skillful 1 v. 1 play is just as much a part of their repertoire as dynamic high-speed dribbling and perfectly synchronized pass sequences. Especially after a switch of play, they often run to the endline for a cross, or take the ball into the middle for a shot at the goal. How can you prepare your own wide midfielders for such a wide range of technical and tactical demands? DFB coach Ralf Peter will show you how to do it step by step in this article, with detailed tips, suggestions and insights into this exceptionally versatile position.
